It’s getting cooler here in Ontario and the kids have been loving sporting their adorable pumpkin hats! This week I have the body of the hat pattern for you. Once you get the 3rd loop stitch figured out, it’s the perfect mindless project to sit and watch an episode of your favorite show while you work.

After you join the edge of the panel to finish this part, the hat should stretch slightly to fit around the recipients head. If at all possible, especially if you are a gauge rebel (you know who you are haha) check the sizing at the end of this part before beginning the next section.

Half double crochet 3rd loop:

Instead of working under the top 2 loops as usual (black marks), insert your hook into the 3rd loop (green marks) on the front of the stitch when working in rows.

• The Pumpkin Hat can be worn slouchy or with the brim folded up. If you would like it more or less slouchy, simply increase or decrease the number of stitches in the starting chain.

• The body of the hat is worked in rows, seamed and gathered at the top for the stem to be worked in rounds.

• Starting chain at the start of each row/round does not count as a stitch.

• Watch you do not skip the first and last stitch of the 3rd loop hdc, count your stitches to be sure.

Body of Hat

With orange yarn, ch 24 (26, 29, 32, 36, 39)

Row 1: Working into the single loop on the back of the ch, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and ea st across, ch 2, turn. [22 sts (24, 27, 30, 34, 37)]

Row 2: hdc in the third loop of ea st, ch 2, turn.

Row 3-34 (38, 42, 46, 50, 54): Repeat row 2.

At this point it is highly recommended that you test the sizing of your hat before seaming to ensure a perfect fit, add or subtract rows if you require a smaller or larger size.

After the last row hold your work like you are about to start another row, do not ch. To seam the ends together, Insert hook into the 3rd loop of the front piece and under the front loop of the foundation ch from the first row, pull through to slst the ends together. See photo below for reference. Do not FO, continue with stem.

The next and final part of the pattern will available next Monday October 21! Remember you can get the full pattern PDF in my Ravelry and Etsy Shops if you need the complete pattern now.
